Geigenbau Lanz: Sand settles into a Chladni figure on a vibrating violin top, and the strings can be plucked.
Tripscha Digital built this website in 2026 for a violin workshop in Mittenwald. The notes below show what is on the first screen and why.
What is on the first screen is there for a reason.

Chladni figure
At the eigenfrequencies of the top, the sand stays on the nodal lines: first the X, then the ring.
Frequency
The readout gives frequency and mode; when the ring sits an octave above the X, the top is tuned.
Bow
The bow is the slider. The marks jump straight to torsion, X and ring.
What was missing, and what is there now.
Starting point
Parents call because they don't know which violin size their child needs. Musicians want to hear an instrument before they travel to Mittenwald.
What we built
Chladni figures with 12,000 grains of sand at the real eigenmodes, strings as pluckable dividers in real tuning, violin, viola and cello at the same scale and a size finder by arm length.
Result
After three measurements the violin size is settled, and the fitting appointment is half filled in.
What visitors ask
Why does it cost that much? Can I configure my own piece? How long does it take? Can I visit the workshop?
